Intriguing odds: who will get to the NFL playoffs according to the bookmaker’s account.
American football has always been an unpredictable game. And it’s not about injuries or in the short term of the regular season. It is also a matter of global phenomena that are changing the world. This season, partly due to the coronavirus pandemic, the impact of which on the quality of the NFL team’s game we can not yet assess. More surprises await us. But there is a difference between “there will always be teams that will surprise you” and “these teams will surprise you”. Pro Football Focus has made a simulation of the season, estimated the probability of teams getting into the playoffs, and now let’s look at the predictions of the PFF and bookmakers in Las Vegas.
Cincinnati Bengals. Odds to get to the NFL playoffs = 7.5
The beginning of the season in Cincinnati is not the most difficult – Chargers, Browns, Eagles, Jaguars. In the middle of the season – a series of games with the Redskins, Giants, and Dolphins. If the Browns or Steelers fail, the Bengals’ chances of getting into the post-season will increase. Therefore, the Bengals are not so far from the level of teams vying for the playoffs in the AFC, conferences where the leaders are very strong, but behind them – the abyss. Our editorial office estimated the chances of Cincinnati entering the season at 25%. As we see, bookmakers have given lower odds. Will be interesting to see whose forecasts will be more accurate?
Miami Dolphins. Odds to get to the playoffs = 5
One should bear in mind that the assessment of the prospects of Miami is not only about the strength of the Dolphins, but also about the weaknesses of the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots. Roaster Dolphins generated the lowest number of WARs of all teams last year, but they seem to be moving in the right direction in terms of team composition. Signed Byron Jones, the third most valuable NFL cornerback of the last two seasons, and he will join Xavien Howard, whom in 2018 to generate about 0.25 WAR, but missed three-quarters of last season. And in the first round was chosen Noah Igbinoghene, Auburn’s cornerback, and now Brian Flores has a very interesting secondary. Our odds estimate for Miami is 45%.
New York Jets. Odds to get to the playoffs = 4.8
We estimated the Jets’ chances of getting in the post-season at 30%, which is lower than the Dolphins, because we estimate the level of coaches and talents of quarterback Sam Darnold, who was higher in Miami than in New York, but the chances are still interesting. Also, there is a high probability that the defense of the Jets, which last year had good statistics, will continue to play at an excellent level and will not be embarrassed by our forecasts.
