European soccer players rarely transfer to MLS. However, Alejandro Pozuelo is an exception. A 28-year-old Spaniard decided to improve his career prospects and changed the Belgian championship to Canada, becoming the highest-paid MLS soccer player from Europe.

Unconvincing Career Start

Pozuelo`s career began at Betis. He was on the primary team but did not gain a foothold there, and in the summer of 2013, he switched to Swansea in Welsh. However, Alejandro did not prove himself and was fired. Thus, he moved to KRC Genk (Belgium). Up to the beginning of 2019, Pozuelo was the captain of Genk. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most successful clubs in the country.

Nevertheless, the Belgian championship is not very highly rated in Europe. Besides, in the top leagues, Pozuelo looked unconvincing. By the way, in Belgium, he earned less than a million a year. Meanwhile, Toronto FC offered the Spaniard a salary of 3.8 million dollars a year. Fans did not like the transfer and began to consider the Spaniard to be a traitor.

Second Wind

In 2017, Toronto won everything in the league. Also, in 2018, the club lost only on a penalty in the CONCACAF Champions League final. Thus, more hope was put on Pozuelo, because previously the club had lost its leaders Sebastian Giovinco and Victor Vazquez.

The Spaniard has become a real star in America. For example, in the 2019 season, Pozuelo played 34 games in the MLS, scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists. By the way, this is the case when it is impossible to say that the soccer player was going after the money – a bonus is not prescribed in the Pozuelo contract, so his excellent games show a desire to develop and win, rather than earn money. Nevertheless, he is the highest-paid MLS soccer player from Europe.
