The Historic Drop of Transfer Market Fees

The Coronavirus pandemic is causing clubs to regroup and restructure their budgets, which in turn leads to transfer market fees taking an unprecedented dive. How will the transfer market fees in the article below change?

Insane Numbers No More

With only nine players in the world being valued at more than 100 million euros, the drop signifies the start of a new era. Before, it wasn’t unusual for a club to spend dozens of millions on a good player who showed promise.

For instance, in 2017 Manchester United signed Romelu Lukaku, a rising talent at the time, for what was reported to be a 90 million fee. The football scene is unlikely to see that kind of generosity in the near future.

Experts claim that the previous numbers were unreasonably inflated, which will now cause a great deal of struggle for clubs – getting a return on their previous investments will be close to impossible.

Above and Below

Among the nine players who remained above the 100 million marks are Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi. Other famous superstars fell behind, with legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo being valued at only 60 million.

  • Neymar – 128 million.
  • Sadio Mane – 120 million.
  • Mohamed Salah – 120 million.
  • Harry Kane – 120 million.
  • Kevin De Bruyne – 120 million.
  • Jadon Sancho – 117 million.

Conclusion

It is safe to assume that most clubs won’t be going on a ‘shopping spree’ during the upcoming summer transfer window. On the other hand, major teams that have more funds at their hands might seize the opportunity to acquire some of the more talented players for a fee that is likely to go up in the next year or two.

However, the uncertainty of the situation makes it hard to predict how the next months will play out. Will the transfer fees drop even lower? It depends on whether or not leagues and clubs can handle the current crisis well enough to keep the ecosystem of football in decent shape.
