Competitions were to be held from March 9 to March 23 in Japan, the USA, and Taiwan. However, the organizers of the World Baseball Classic have canceled the 2021 tournament due to the rescheduling of the Olympic Games in Tokyo for the same year.
About the Tournament
The WBC is the only national team competition in which the Major League Baseball players have participated (baseball was removed from the list of Olympic sports in 2008 and is to be presented again at the Games in Tokyo in 2021). Besides, 20 national teams were scheduled to participate at the WBC tournament in the spring of 2021.
The competition is a part of the bargaining agreement between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association. The contract expires in December 2021, so a new agreement will be required to hold the games. However, the organizers doubt whether it will be possible to hold a new tournament before 2023. By the way, the 2017 winner was the U.S. National Team who crushed Puerto Rico.
Let’s Remember How It Was
Something unimaginable was expected from the final game between the USA and Puerto Rico. But fortunately, the fight was not so dramatic thanks to our starter Marcus Stroman. For six innings, Marcus allowed his opponents to score only one hit and one walk, having scored three strikeouts himself. Not surprisingly, it was Stroman who received the MVP award in the final stage. In general, it was a fairly easy victory for the United States. The ardent team of Puerto Rico, which dominated throughout the WBC, was forced to be satisfied with second place. Finally, it would be interesting to see their new fight, but alas, as already known, the organizers of the World Baseball Classic cancel the 2021 tournament. The new date is still unknown so far.
