The news that Ron Gardenhire was resigning sounded like thunder in the clear sky. And he isn’t just leaving the Tigers, he is completely retiring. This unexpected and sad news was announced by the general manager of Detroit. Now the Tigers will be led by Lloyd McClendon.

Gardenhire himself later said that he wanted to retire at the end of the 2020 season, but the recent unpleasant food poisoning forced him to speed up the process. “This is a sad day for me and my family,” Gardenhire said in a press release.

Considering that Ron Gardenhire defeated prostate cancer in 2017, such an abrupt end to his career due to some kind of food poisoning looked doubtful. We want to believe that Gardenhire will not have any more serious health problems.

The 62-year-old is best known for his work with the Minnesota Twins. Ron took over the Twins in 2002 and immediately made them one of the leaders of the American League. In eight of the first nine seasons, Gardenhire’s players had a positive difference in wins and losses, they won the division 6 times. Minnesota during this period released a whole scattering of bright stars, such as, Joe Mauer, Johan Santana, and Justin Morneau. In 2010, Gardenhire was named the AL’s best manager.

In total, Gardenhire has had exactly 1,200 victories and 1,280 losses in the regular seasons during his managerial career. In the account of the number of victories in his career, Gardenhire is ranked 48th in history as a manager.

“I want to thank all those incredible people I’ve been lucky enough to work with over sixteen seasons. First of all, it’s the players of the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins. Guys, you’re just incredible! Yes, I’m leaving the sport, but I’ll follow the success of these teams. I want to thank the fans for supporting the Tigers and promise that they will be surprised by Detroit’s success soon. ” – said the former head coach.
