On October 4 on UFC Fight Island in Abu Dhabi was an event called UFC on ESPN 16. Among the famous names – ex-champ Holly Holm faced Irene Aldana, and Carlos Conduit tried to win for the first time since 2015.

Vendramini vs Ayari

It took one minute for Luigi Vendramini to shake the German Jessin Ayari. A series of overhands spiced up by the head-kick and a few hammer fists on the ground left the referee no choice but to stop the beating. That was a pretty good start to the event. Sad not all the bouts would be as hot as the first one.

Kenney vs Alatengheili

Another prelim fight gave us a good old parade of violence by Kenney who absolutely destroyed Alatengheili by the body strikes in the finest tradition of Mirco CroCop. We can only wonder how could the Chinese survive all that strikes and let the judges decide the bout’s fate. 37 significant body strikes were landed by Casey Kenney and thus he’s deserved a victory by the unanimous decision.

Condit vs McGee

The first round against the TUF winner Court McGee was so-so for Carlos Condit. Two years away from fighting has taken its toll. Fortunately, he started to wake up a bit in subsequent rounds and McGee seemed to have nothing to properly respond to the Natural Born Killer. He broke McGee`s nose, conducted several takedowns, and eventually won by the unanimous decision. Congrats to Carlos, His five-loss streak is finally over.

Main card

Surprisingly, bouts in the main card seemed less interesting to us than the prelims. Kyler Philips beat Cameron Else by the TKO at the beginning of the second round by stomping him in the back mount. Undefeated Serbian fighter Dusko Todorovich debuted in UFC against Dequan Townsend and finished him in the 2nd round, also in the mount, thus almost certainly retiring the fighter with the 5th loss in a row. Germaine de Randamie strangled Julianna Pena by the tight guillotine in the 3rd round. It was quite a surprise, considering the fact that she is a pure kickboxer.

As for the co-main and main events, the situation is even more disappointing. The heavyweights’ bout of Yorgan De Castro vs Carlos Felipe wasn’t the co-main event we’ve been waiting for. While Felipe was scoring points and landing lonely stikes, De Castro couldn’t adapt to the tempo and showed nothing expect several unsuccessful attempts to finish Felipe by lucky shots.

The Priest Daughter Holly Holm faced #6 contender Irene Aldana. It was clearly a one-way street. Aldana couldn’t do anything to the constantly moving Holly Holm. The bout between these two was nothing but the one-side 5-round beating from the Priest Daughter. Aldana was doing nothing expect swallowing punches from Holm. She may deserve some credit for her durability against devastating strikes from Holly.

Conclusion

Overall, the UFC on ESPN 16 event came up quite boring, especially when it came to the main card, in which the fighters didn’t manage to show anything unique and significant. Maybe it`s even good for us to take a breath before the UFC Fight Night: Moraes vs Sandhagen that will take place by the end of this week.
