How It Happened

Small words tend to snowball into big things, especially in the fighting world. Oscar De La Hoya, one of the top boxing promoters and a former professional boxer, said on “The State of Combat” podcast that it would take him just two rounds to take down Conor McGregor in a boxing ring.

‘Notorious’ replied promptly, Tweeting that he accepts Oscar De La Hoya’s challenge. And of course he did – McGregor is not one to run from the fight. He isn’t new to the idea of boxing either.

McGregor fought Mayweather, the undefeated eleven-time boxing champion, on August 26, 2017. The fight was called ‘The Money Fight’, as it has the second recorded highest pay-per-view rate ever – people really wanted to watch it.

At first, nobody believed that the fight had any real chance of happening. When the match started to come together, barely anyone expected the UFC champion to last more than a couple of rounds.

But McGregor proved the doubters wrong with his tenacity and mastery. He utilized angles, threw amazing punches, withstood high pressure, and was a tough competitor throughout. Only in the 10th round did the referee stop the fight – Mayweather won with a TKO.

“The Golden Boy” competed as a professional boxer from 1992 to 2008, retiring at the age of 35 with multiple world trophies from six different weight classes. He is now considered the 13th best boxer in history, pound for pound.

But Oscar is now 47, an age not necessarily conducive to high-intensity training and certainly not one in tip top shape. Mayweather was a reigning champion, and even that didn’t make the fight one-sided.

Conclusion

We don’t know if the fight between McGregor and De La Hoya will ever happen (nobody does), but ‘two rounds’ seems like a bit of a stretch, that’s for sure. If we learned anything about McGregor, it’s that he tends to defy expectations – and he is definitely capable of putting up one hell of a fight against anyone, no matter their skill or status.
